Tom Brady is widely regarded as the greatest American football player of all time. In his 23 seasons in the NFL, he won seven Super Bowls—six with the New England Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—making him the most accomplished athlete in this sport. Given his legacy, the Patriots waived the four-year waiting period needed to induct him in their Hall of Fame. At his induction ceremony, Brady gave a powerful, evergreen speech for the ages about perseverance and teamwork.

Having spent two decades leading one of the most successful sports teams in history, Brady's insights resonate beyond football. “The foundation of a successful team, a family, or business is asking what you can do to support the mission,” he said in his speech. “Everyone was committed to winning. Everyone was selfless. Everyone was always asking, ‘What can I do to help the team win?’As the great John Wooden said, ‘Happiness begins where selfishness ends.’”

As the 199th overall pick out of 254 in the 2000 NFL draft, little was expected of Brady at the beginning of his professional career. However, he eventually rose to the very top, becoming a legend and being inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in June 2024. His is the only induction ceremony to take place in a sold-out 65,000-person-capacity stadium—the one where Patriots play their home games.

Addressing the question he often gets asked about whether his children will play football, Brady said that he's going to support their dreams, whatever they are. However, he admits, he can't help but recommend it given what it adds to one's life.

“I would encourage everyone to play football for the simple reason that it is hard,” Brady says. “It’s hard when you’re young to wake up in the offseason at 6 a.m. to go train and workout, knowing that all your friends are sleeping in and eating pancakes. It’s hard when you’re on your way to practice, weighed down with all your gear, and it’s 90 degrees out, and all the other kids are at the pool or at the beach, and your body is already completely exhausted from workouts and two-a-days. It’s hard to throw, catch, block, and tackle, and hit kids when they’re way bigger and way more developed than you, only to go home that night, bruised and battered and strained, but knowing you have to show up again the next day for just the chance to try again.

“But understand this: life is hard. No matter who you are, there are bumps and hits and bruises along the way. And my advice is to prepare yourself because football lessons teach us that success and achievement come from overcoming adversity, and that team accomplishment far exceeds anyone’s individual goals. To be successful at anything, the truth is you don’t have to be special. You just have to be what most people aren’t. Consistent, determined, and willing to work for it. No shortcuts.”

Following his retirement in 2023, Brady's consistency and determination hasn't waivered. Now, the former NFL player brings his expertise to other ventures, such as a broadcasting career at Fox Sports, and as a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, the WNBA team Las Vegas Aces, and the British soccer team Birmingham City—all of which have seen improvements or even championships since his arrival.

Meet the First Female-Only Skateboarding Group in Ethiopia

Every Saturday morning, at the Addis Skate Park in Ethiopia’s capital city, countless girls gather to skateboard. That wasn’t always the case, especially because skateboarding has so often been associated with men. But once 27-year-old Sosina Challa founded Ethiopian Girl Skaters (EGS), the demographics of the park slowly began to shift. Now, as one of the country’s first female-only skateboarding groups, EGS offers its members a palpable sense of community, all while challenging stereotypes surrounding skateboarding.

“I had no idea how [EGS] would go, how people would see it, if people would consider it acceptable,” Challa reflected in a 2022 interview with Vogue. “People would say to me, ‘You’re a woman, you should be helping your mother.’”

Before founding EGS, Challa struggled to feel at ease at the Addis Skate Park—she was, after all, one of very few girls that would frequent the park. Eventually, the discomfort prompted her to work with Ethiopia Skate, a small nonprofit also dedicated to skateboarders across the country, to establish a separate all-female group. During the EGS’ first session a couple of years ago, only a few dozen women and girls joined, but they were still curious about how to put on protective pads and balance on a board.

“People wanted to know what it felt like, and they wanted to get past their fear,” Challa says.

Today, EGS boasts over 65 registered members and, in addition to skateboarding, it also provides activities such as one-on-one learning and counseling sessions. The atmosphere fostered by EGS is clearly one of empowerment, encouraging its members to explore skateboarding not only as a sport or hobby but also as a form of personal expression.

“When I skate, I dream big, and at the same time, I feel as though I have accomplished my dream,” Hiwot Hassen told Unicef in an article about the group.

“I believe skateboarding changed my life,” Denkneh Seble added. “Each person has unique traits and comes from a diverse background with colorful histories. A day with them is a day I never want to miss.”

To learn more about this extraordinary community, check out the Ethiopian Girl Skaters on Instagram.

Ethiopian Girl Skaters is one of Ethiopia’s first female-only skateboarding groups.

The group empowers its members to explore skateboarding not only as a sport or hobby but as a form of personal expression.

Together, they challenge stereotypes surrounding skateboarding as a male-dominated sport, as well as cultural and societal expectations placed on women.

“When I skate, I dream big, and at the same time, I feel as though I have accomplished my dream,” one of the group’s members says.

Another EGS member says: “I believe skateboarding changed my life.”

82-Year-Old Powerlifting Grandma Is Proof That Strength Knows No Age

Powerlifting, a strength sport focused on hoisting up the most weight possible, is often seen as a sport for young and muscular athletes. But Faith O’Reilly, an 82-year-old grandma based in Colorado, is ready to challenge this idea. In an exciting prospect, she'll soon get to showcase her abilities at a national competition.

Born in St. Louis, O'Reilly moved with her family to Des Moines. She then attended the University of Iowa, where she discovered weightlifting. “While I was in law school I kind of fell in with some people who were doing weightlifting, and they invited me to go to a powerlifting meet with them,” she told the National Senior Games. “I was watching it and thought, ‘Well, I can do that.’” And she indeed did it. O'Reilly committed to the sport, even winning multiple state championships. However, a career move to St. Paul, Minnesota, resulted in her having less and less time to practice, eventually leading her to drop lifting altogether.

Upon her retirement in 2007, O'Reilly rediscovered her love for the sport. Having fallen in love with Saguache, a small town in Colorado, during previous travels with her granddaughter, she settled there. With more free time and surrounded by green landscapes and fresh air, she started lifting again. She even has her own gym setup with special safety bars, allowing her to train on her own time and terms. Now, she has joined the impressive ranks of 95-year-old lifter Catherine Kuehn and 81-year-old Nora Langdon.

Having reaped the benefits of this discipline, O'Reilly recommends it not just for seniors, but everyone who is able to practice it. “It’s overall good for you physically, and as you age you can have problems with bone density and losing muscle tone,” she says. “So this helps you stay fit. I still do a lot of the outdoor yard work and chores of the lodge myself.”

O'Reilly last competed at the 2024 Summer Showdown and Team Cup in Colorado, where she was the oldest competitor overall. Her latest stats show that she had lifted a total of 281.1 pounds—77.1 pounds in Squat, 66.1 pounds in Bench, and 132.2 pounds in Deadlift.

“Besides the workout, it gives you the chance to be involved in an athletic adventure, and the people that do this are a very open and friendly group of people,” O'Reilly says about competing. “You make a lot of connections and get support.”

The octogenarian will now compete at the National Senior Games, which will take place between July 24 and August 4 in Des Moines, Iowa. With powerlifting making its debut this year, O'Reilly is ready to take on the competition as the oldest female participant in this discipline. “It’s really fun to see and interact with other people who are enjoying being more fit than the rest of our age group,” she gushes. “You know, the oldest person who competed in Pittsburgh was 103, so that gives me a goal.”

At just 28 years old, Olympic swimmer Katie Ledecky is already one of the greatest athletes of all time. With 14 Olympic medals, featuring nine golds, she is the most decorated American woman in Olympic history, and is tied as the most decorated female swimmer ever. With such an established legacy, people have wondered how she keeps herself grounded and focused. During a commencement speech at Stanford University, the swimmer shared what is on her mind when she's in the pool.

Ledecky, who graduated from Stanford in 2020, spoke to graduates at the school’s 134th commencement ceremony. There, she shared that one of the questions she gets asked the most is what she thinks about when she's swimming. As the top athlete that she is, Ledecky always counts the laps, of course, but she also revealed that her favorite races are the ones where she thinks about people she loves.

“I think of my Grandpa Jerry immigrating from Czechoslovakia to study at an American university,” Ledecky confesses in her speech. “I think about my Grandpa Hagan serving as a Navy surgeon in World War II.”

The Olympian recalls how she had two medal races at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics that were about 70 minutes apart. During the first one—the 200-meter freestyle—she felt off despite it being her 36th international race, and she came in fifth place. Clouded with doubt, she had under an hour to get ready for her next final, the tougher 1,500-meter freestyle. “I kept telling myself to relax, to shake things off and focus,” she says. “That's when I started to think about my grandparents.”

Ledecky then envisioned both her grandmothers watching her on TV back home. “I pictured them cheering for me, and [I decided] if I were to dwell on anything in those difficult moments, it was going to be toughness and warmth of my grandmothers.”

The swimmer says that for nearly every stroke of that 30-lap race, she repeated their names in her head. “Grandma Hagan, Grandma Berta,” she says as she mimics her arm motions. “And it worked. I swam with a sense of strength and freedom. I feel like my grandparents lifted me up to gold that day.”

With that, the Washington, D.C., swimmer won her first gold medal at Tokyo 2020 with a final time of 15:37.34, just short of the Olympic record she had set during the preliminary rounds. She would later win another gold medal, this time at the 800-meter freestyle. At the following Olympics, Paris 2024, she repeated her feat, winning two golds—the 800-meter freestyle and the 1,500-meter freestyle.

Drawing from her experience, Ledecky gave graduates a final piece of advice: keep your loved ones close. “Point being: you can’t go the distance alone. Continue to surround yourself with people who will challenge you, support you, and make you laugh,” she advises. “Make sure you spend time with the people who matter to you.”

With three years to go until Los Angeles 2028, Ledecky is still going strong. On May 3, she broke her own world record in the women's 800-meter freestyle at the TYR Swim Pro Series in Florida.

Falling in public is not ideal and during a race? It can mean losing the competition, or even getting injured. But not for Brooklyn Anderson, a teen track star from Oregon. When Brooklyn tripped during the girls' 100-meter hurdles at the Oregon State Track & Field Championships, she somersaulted to the finish line, getting first place in the race.

A video shows Brooklyn, a junior at Thurston High School, getting her right knee caught on the final hurdle—causing spectators to audibly gasp, especially because she was well ahead in the race. Rather than completely falling down, she tucked her head, and did a double somersault, crossing the finish line almost with her back on the ground. Despite tripping and the unusual finale, she won with a time of 14.93.

“All I remember is resorting back to my gymnastics career and just somersaulting over that line,” she told The Oregonian. “I wasn’t sure how far back everybody else was behind me, so I knew to just keep rolling, to keep going, because I really wanted to get first.”

The young athlete also shares that no one had ever cheered for her as hard as when she made that race-saving move. Looking back at seeing her name in first place on the board, she said, “I was just so proud. Just very, very happy.”

Brooklyn posted a video of her fall on Instagram, thanking her fellow racers for a very special championship. “Wow, what a memorable season. Year 3 is one for the books,” she writes. “Thank you everybody for the support, and especially thank you to the most amazing heat of girls a girl could finish a race with. You guys are awesome. GO COLTS.”

In addition to her now-famous 100-meter hurdles competition, Brooklyn was also in the girls' 100-meter race, where she came in fourth; the girls' long jump, where she placed third; and the girls' 4-by-100-meter relay, where her team came in 10th place. Beyond these achievements, Brooklyn has now become a poetic example of how tumbling doesn't always take you out of the race—it may just be a different path to victory.

For many runners, a fall can mean losing a race. But not for Brooklyn Anderson, a teen track star from Oregon.

Skydiving is one of the most thrilling extreme sports out there. And yet, for all the adrenaline and speed that comes with it, its gravity-defying quality also works as a blank canvas for acrobatic gymnastics and dance. That's why it has inspired competitions such as the World Championships of Indoor Skydiving. This amazing event has a wind tunnel that serves as the stage for dazzling, mid-air choreography.

At this year's edition, Team Singapore came in first place for their free routine in the 4-Way Dynamic competition. “We are so so happy with it,” skydiver Kyra Poh wrote on Instagram. “[The] dynamic 4-way routine is definitely the coolest to create and we’re happy to add new elements and our own style.” The team also came in third place in the 2-Way Dynamic and set a world record for fastest time in 45.110 seconds in this challenge.

The video of their performance is both a great snapshot of this sport and a document of Poh and her teammates' determination. Here, the most delicate and graceful move is the one that requires the most strength. And yet, they make it look effortless, as if they only had to coordinate and do the next step. In reality, the team performs against a massive force that shoots them upward, and they use this “obstacle” as a companion to their aerial dance.

The uniqueness of this extreme sport has led people in the comments of the video to call for it to be at the Olympics. They argue in favor of its inclusion due to the level of control and concentration it requires, which can surely only be achieved by the world's most elite athletes. Others have had cheekier takes, wondering how a person from a hundred years ago would react to this footage.

As for Poh and her teammates, they continue to show how these moves are possible both inside a wind tunnel and and out in the open sky. They are also committed to educating anyone who is curious about this discipline. They make explanatory videos, as well as being open and honest about the training needed and possible injuries an athlete can face. Ultimately, through social media, these top athletes have made people from far reaches of the world fall in love with a not-so-well-known sport that clearly deserves more attention.

Athletics and Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) have unveiled renders for a stylish ballpark in Las Vegas. The stadium will be the new home of the Athletics, a Major League Baseball (MLB) team relocating from Oakland to Nevada. Located on the Las Vegas Strip, the ballpark will have a 33,000-person capacity. With BIG as the design lead and HNTB as the sports/hospitality designer and architect of record, the new ballpark is set to open for the 2028 season.

The stadium design brings together the perks of a covered ballpark with the airiness and views of an open-air stadium. The roof is made of five baseball pennant-shaped layers that allow a soft natural light to flood in from the north while curbing direct sunlight and heat from the south. As it sits on the the corner of Tropicana and Las Vegas Boulevards, it will offer unbeatable views of the Strip from the stands. On top of this, the ballpark's tiered design allows fans on both upper and lower seating bowls to be physically closer to the pitch, providing clear sight lines from every seat.

“The resultant architecture is like a spherical armadillo—shaped by the local climate–while opening and inviting the life of the Strip to enter and explore,” says Bjarke Ingels, Founder and Creative Director of BIG, via a statement. “In the city of spectacle, the A’s ‘armadillo’ is designed for passive shading and natural light–the architectural response to the Nevada climate generating a new kind of vernacular icon in Vegas.”

The new Athletics ballpark will have record-setting features. First is the cable-net glass window on the outfield, which is slated to become the world's largest. The stadium will also have an 18,000-square-foot jumbotron, making it the largest screen in all 30 MLB stadiums in North America–although the sixth in the Las Vegas area alone.

“The collaboration between BIG’s creativity and HNTB’s technical expertise allows for a truly innovative and bold design while ensuring an unmatched fan experience,” said Athletics Managing Partner and Owner John Fisher. “We hope to add to the dynamic atmosphere and liveliness of the Las Vegas Strip, creating a welcoming environment for all of Southern Nevada.”

As thrilling as it is on its own, the stadium is expected to be part of a larger development, occupying only nine acres on a 35-acre site. The rest is being considered for resort development, with Bally’s and GLPI working on a master plan that will be announced later this year. The team will also work with local authorities to refine the design and ensure easy access to the stadium while limiting emissions, particularly by offering an express bus service to the stadium.

“The A's have created a remarkable design that adds to the rich fabric of must-see attractions in Las Vegas,” said Bally’s Chairman Soo Kim. “This is a once-in-a-generation project, and we are thrilled for the opportunity to develop a comprehensive site plan at this iconic location. We look forward to sharing more on our plan in due course.”

Surfing is one of the most thrilling sports out there. And it has become increasingly accessible to people with disabilities, thanks to the perseverance and public feats of athletes like Pegleg Bennett. The 55-year-old surfer has become a beacon of para surfing, serving both as a trailblazer for his local community of Cornwall, England, and a teacher for all of those who hope to experience this sport regardless of their disabilities.

Bennett was born without an ankle on his left leg, causing his foot to be amputated when he was only 13 months old. Despite this experience which could be seen as a setback, his fearless spirit rose to the surface from a young age. After mastering swimming, he learned how to surf when he was 17 with the help of a prosthetic leg given to him by the UK's National Health Service—he later altered it by drilling holes to improve his performance. “I didn't want to be sat on the beach, I wanted to be involved,” Bennett told the BBC.

Fast forward four decades, and Bennett is now a professional surfer with custom carbon fiber and titanium prosthetics that allow him to move effortlessly on the board. “I get asked a fair bit as an amputee surfer about how I handle balance,” he shared on Instagram. “For me 95% of balance is through my back leg. These foot positioning moves happen in seconds and I don't actually consciously think about them anymore and they just happen.”

Born Rick Bennet, the surfer had been known as “Pegleg” since he was a kid, prompting him to adopt it as his legal name in 2016. The moniker has also inspired the name of his surfing school, Peg's Surf Coaching, which operates out of the beaches of Cornwall. A qualified surf coach and instructor, he aims to share his love for surfing with people of all ages. His website explains: “As an amputee surfer himself, competing and coaching internationally, Peg maintains a ‘can-do' attitude in his approach to coaching whether that relates to your inexperience, fears, disabilities, confidence or anything else that may hold you back.”

Bennett has also competed internationally, with one of the highlights being the 2021 AmpSurf ISA World Para Surfing Championships, where he represented his native England and helped them secure 7th place. He also appeared on the British version of Survivor in 2023, coming in fifth place and earning him the admiration of millions who learned his story on the reality competition show.

Whether coaching or racing, one thing seems clear—there's no stopping Bennett if he's set on achieving something. “As far as my competition life goes, I'm gonna keep competing as long as I can, until my body says you've had it or the purse strings go,” Bennett says. “I just want to keep surfing forever.”

Ski footage is usually full of thrills and amazing views, but a video shared by a group of skiers in France shows the more dangerous side of this extreme sport. The POV video, shot with a GoPro camera attached to a skier's helmet, sees him falling feet-first into a deep glacier crevasse and narrowly missing a terrible fate.

The clip was posted to social media by Les Powtos, a group of French off-piste skiers. The crew was skiing near a glacier on the mountain of Meije near La Grave in the southern Alps when one of their members came across a hole in the ground at such high speed that he couldn't avoid falling down. Much to his luck, a bump on the side of the glacier prevented him from going under. “Oh, the idiot!” He can be heard saying to himself in French.

The team members estimate that the skier slid about 50 feet into the glacier before coming to a stop. As he pummeled down, the others watched him disappear from a lower vantage point. “Those were the longest minutes of our lives. We didn't know how deep he'd fallen, or if he'd slipped headfirst,” a member of Les Powtos told 20 Minutes.

Once the rest of Les Powtos reached the spot where their friend disappeared, they found he had started hoisting himself with the help of the crampons under his shoes and the skis on his back. The team then used ice screws, axes, and a rope to bring him to safety. Luckily, the man didn't sustain any injuries and was even able to continue skiing after catching his breath.

The video dates back to April 2022, but out of respect for their friend—who chose to remain anonymous—and the fact that they almost lost a member of their crew, Les Powtos waited a year to share it.

“We didn't post the video before because we questioned ourselves a lot about whether or not to publish it, we needed to take a step back,” they explained to Ouest-France. “We let a year go by, then finally decided to post it. We thought it couldn't hurt to share our experience.” While they are aware that the video is really scary, they see it as a prevention tool. “Even if you know the La Grave glacier, you can be taken in by euphoric descents,” they add.

The group continues to share their adventures on social media, which show fewer moments of tension but rather lots of footage of them sliding down the French Alps and the amazing views on the way down. To stay up to date with them, follow Les Powtos on Instagram.

Manchester United, one of the most legendary soccer teams in the world, has unveiled plans for a brand new 100,000-seat stadium. The project was designed by Foster + Partners, the British international studio led by renowned architect Norman Foster. The firm, which will also be revamping the surrounding stadium district, has shared the first conceptual images of how this monumental endeavor will look.

The project aims to maintain the identity and legacy of Old Trafford, the club's historic home, while offering an ultramodern experience to fans. One of the main aspects of the new Manchester United stadium is sustainability, which can be seen throughout the design. The stadium area will be walkable, accessible by public transit, and have plenty of green areas. On top of that, the venue boasts an encircling canopy that shields the stands from bad weather while collecting rainwater. Outside, a public plaza twice the size of Trafalgar Square will welcome fans to every game.

“It is a mixed-use miniature city of the future – driving a new wave of growth and creating a global destination that Mancunians can be proud of,” says Foster in a statement. “This has to be one of the most exciting projects in the world today. It starts with the fans—bringing them closer than ever to the pitch, cultivating an incredible atmosphere. Beyond that, the stadium is a miniature city of the future, setting a new global benchmark for sustainability and connectivity.”

The new Manchester United stadium has been described as the “most exciting urban regeneration project in the UK since the 2012 London Olympics” by Lord Sebastian Coe, chair of the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force. The new venue aims to transform the surrounding area into a global sports and cultural hub. As part of Greater Manchester’s economic growth strategy, it could deliver up to £7.3 billion annually to the UK, create 92,000 new jobs, prompt the building of 17,000 new homes, and bring 1.8 million additional visitors annually.

For all the excitement, many questions surround this project. The team has not disclosed how the new stadium will be paid for, while BBC reports that the team is more than £1 billion in debt, prompting Sir Jim Ratcliffe, minority owner of Manchester United, to launch cost-cutting measures inside the team—which is currently going through one of its worst seasons in history. While there is no confirmed starting date for construction, Foster's team aims to finish the project in five years, boosted by working with pre-fabricated modular components that can be easily delivered via the Manchester ship canal.

“Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world’s greatest football stadium. This new home will transform the fan experience while acting as a catalyst for lasting social and economic renewal,” says Ratcliffe. “Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for the past 115 years, but it has fallen behind the best arenas in world sport. By building next to the existing site, we will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford, while creating a truly state-of-the-art stadium that transforms the fan experience, only footsteps from our historic home.”
